On Feb 10th, 2020 (aka, ‘The Before Times’) I picked up some branded flyers from a print shop, along with my first run of business cards. I had ordered 2500 flyers, but I was impatient and wanted to start dropping them off at houses right away, as I had been eager to launch my newly minted company: JDavis Painting. So I got the print shop to print just 250 for that day, and then send me the other 2250 a few days later. With those flyers in hand, I started knocking on doors that very night.
On Feb 18, 2021, just one year and one week later, I received the following email from Homestars:
We are thrilled to be recognized with this Industry Award. And in a relatively short amount of time no less!
I suppose you may ask yourself, “How does one win a Best of 2021 Award?” Well let me explain.
The Homestars “Best Of” Awards require a company to meet three important criteria:
- Receive at least twelve 10/10 ratings from real customers in the last the previous calendar year. Well we crossed that hurdle by June of last year. In fact, in the last year we’ve received 30 reviews with a combined rating of 298/300! And the one job where we didn’t get full marks, the client appreciated how we dealt with the situation so much that she’s already hired us to do her exterior this spring!
- Have a star score of 85% or higher. Your overall ‘star score’ is determined by your scores in these four categories: Average Rating, Recency (of reviews), Reputation, and Responsiveness. In the year since we joined Homestars, we have never dipped below 97%.
- Be “Verified by Homestars”. To do this you have to pass their screening process, which includes a Criminal Background check, Credit check, Licensing, and HST/GST registration. Basically Homestars makes sure that you’re a legit operation.
But not only did they select us for their “Best of 2021 Award”, Homestars is also featuring us on their “Ask the Experts” blog series. So keep an eye open for that!
